Jordan’s Principle is a legal requirement that ensures First Nations children can access the services and supports they need for their health, learning, and daily wellbeing. It was created in memory of Jordan River Anderson from Norway House Cree Nation, whose care was delayed because governments could not agree on who was responsible. Jordan’s Principle exists to make sure children receive essential supports when they need them.

What Jordan’s Principle Can Cover

Jordan’s Principle can support a wide range of health, education, and social needs. Every child’s situation is unique, so the supports are based on individual needs, not a set list.

Health Supports

  • Medical equipment or supplies

  • Speech, occupational, psychological, or other assessments

  • Therapeutic and mental health services

Education Supports

  • Tutoring or extra learning support

  • Classroom aids

  • Technology or tools needed for learning

Social and Daily Living Supports

  • Respite for caregivers

  • Cultural, recreational, or land-based programming

  • Transportation for essential appointments

  • Accessibility aids or support workers

If a child needs something to support their wellbeing, learning, or inclusion, Jordan’s Principle may be able to help.

Who Is Eligible

Jordan’s Principle is available to First Nations children from birth to age 18, whether they live on or off reserve. It supports children in temporary, permanent, or shared caregiving arrangements and can help when a child has health needs, developmental delays, or barriers to accessing services.
