Supporting Community in Urban Spaces: IFNA’s Mobile Outreach Van

The IFNA Mobile Mental Outreach Van will soon begin its work in Thunder Bay, offering care, connection, and support. Created in partnership with MoveMobility, the van is a welcoming space where community members can talk, learn about available services, and connect with mental health supports.

The Mobile Mental Outreach Van supports IFNA’s ongoing work with its member Nations by strengthening and rounding out mental health service delivery in urban centres. Many community members travel to Thunder Bay for medical appointments, education, work, or other needs, and the van helps ensure culturally grounded supports remain accessible while away from home. IFNA will continue working closely with community to identify the most appropriate locations and spaces for the van, ensuring services are delivered where they are needed most.

The exterior artwork on the van plays an important role in creating a welcoming and familiar presence. Created by Storm Angeconeb, a Lac Seul artist, the design reflects IFNA’s five member Nations: Lac Seul First Nation, Muskrat Dam First Nation, Pikangikum First Nation, Whitesand First Nation, and Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug.

The artwork also incorporates the four seasons to represent life’s changes, along with everyday ways of life woven together with sacred medicines, grounding the van in cultural identity, continuity, and care.

IFNA is grateful to be able to carry this work forward and looks ahead to the connections, conversations, and support the Mobile Mental Outreach Van will help foster in Thunder Bay.
