The Muskrat Dam First Nation Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Upgrade is intended to bring the system into compliance with Federal and Provincial regulations and allow the boil water advisory to be lifted.

This project will also increase the treated water storage and pumping capacity for the community to meet the 20-year population projection.

The upgrades will include the following major components:

  • Modifications to the raw water intake, including replacement of mechanical and electrical systems and integration with the main WTP SCADA controls;

  • A water treatment plant building expansion along both the north and south side of the WTP, with the north expansion being over the new reservoir chambers, and the south expansion being slab on grade;

  • Reservoir expansion along the north wall of the existing WTP;

  • A new process wastewater holding tank under the WTP expansion;

  • Replacement of the existing direct filtration system with a dual train conventional gravity filtration system (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration);

  • An oxidative sand filtration system to address iron and manganese concerns;

  • Granular activated carbon (GAC) filters to reduce organics in the filtered water;

  • Two stage primary disinfection including UV and chlorination;

  • Modifications to the distribution system pumping to increase reliability, pumping capacity, and emergency fire flow;

  • A larger office and laboratory room;

  • A dedicated chemical storage and dosing room with increased ventilation;

  • A dedicated backup generator for emergency power supply to the facility. This will include decommissioning of the existing diesel tanks located above the reservoir;

  • A new general storage room for tools, safety equipment , and a work bench;

  • Improvements to the building heating and ventilation systems; and

  • Addition of a dedicated truck fill pump and modifications to the truckfill arm to provide insulation and heat tracing.
